Designer and sculptor Ariane van Dievoet creates pieces from material off-cuts to highlight their texture and form.
Specialising in the reuse of materials, she combines traditional and digital techniques to fashion objects and furniture from scraps of wood, bluestone, marble, mirror fragments and more.
A bachelor's degree in interior and spatial design from Chelsea College of Art, London, and a master's degree specialising in adaptive reuse from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), in the United States, laid the foundations for her research. Ariane van Dievoet began her career in Brooklyn, where she founded AVANDI in 2014.
In 2018, she returned to Brussels, where she specialised in sustainable design and digital tools. In 2019, she won the ELLE Deco Uptown design award for her collection made from material scraps from the Obumex brand's workshops. In 2020, she began a collaboration with ironworker Didier Henry, resulting in a series of sculptures in brass and stone offcuts called Fusions.
Ariane van Dievoet passes on her expertise to students at CAD, where she teaches courses in object design and sustainable design and technology.
Co-founder of Augusta, a sustainable design gallery that opened in September 2023 in the Sablon neighbourhood, she designed the interior of the gallery, using as many sustainable materials as possible.
They talk about AVANDI
